Mark Harvey FCA

Mark joined Fuller Spurling from a Top 40 company in Hampshire in 1990 where he worked with a diverse range of high profile businesses. With the redundancies of the early 1990s came the chance to find a more local position, Fuller Spurling was expanding at the time providing the perfect opportunity for both parties.

Mark has grown with the practice and today he not only heads up the Sandhurst practice, but has been a director and major shareholder of the company since 1999. Over this time his work, while still entailing the usual annual accountancy needs of client businesses, has focused more and more on business advice based on the knowledge and experience Mark and his partners can offer.

"Often businesses come to Fuller Spurling because their own accountants have a limited spectrum of advice and knowledge or they lack the care and attention required to fulfil the accounting or personal tax obligations required."

Mark explains: "Our clients value the fact that we are a local firm, with the expertise and knowledge to provide advice across the full business spectrum, including charities."

"Owner managed businesses can deliver huge returns but can be challenging and stressful to run. With 20 staff across two offices we are always available to help and advise."

"We provide our clients with the quality of service that they require. It involves flagging up important tax and accounting deadlines, identifying clients' levels of knowledge so that we can help them at the right level, and generally taking the stress off clients' shoulders."

"We aim to give practical help and guidance and offer advice to try to enable clients to withdraw income from their businesses in a tax efficient manner. For larger businesses we can handle the statutory audit requirements."

What leisure time Mark has is spent with his growing family and at golf when he can find the time to play. Mark enjoys both the competition and the banter that golf can offer and a drink with friends at the nineteenth hole.

Sue Keane BEng FCA

Having studied engineering at University and gained a first class degree Sue Keane’s first project was researching composite materials; however, she preferred life with a much broader focus. Fortunately Sue’s degree also included a business module and so she chose to try her hand at accountancy. She joined a Top 40 practice in Slough where she qualified and remained for a further year.

Sue developed a strong interest in small and medium sized businesses, working closely with the owners and managers. Much of her time involved audits, which required a good deal of travel. After the birth of her first child she chose to work part-time and looking for a local firm was introduced to Fuller Spurling in 1995.

As the firm has grown, so have Sue’s responsibilities; today she not only works full-time but is also a director and shareholder of Fuller Spurling.

The practice has developed a reputation for specialising in Third Sector clients, an area of work that is highly regulated. It is one however that Sue enjoys, "Charity accounts are very demanding and complicated. Even more so today with the increasing need for charities to earn revenue by commercial means. We find that our pro-active approach is well received and our clients make it abundantly clear that they value our support and expertise."

A keen networker, Sue is a committee member of Chertsey Chamber of Commerce and Runnymede BNI, a weekly business network that has provided a great deal of business referrals to the practice.

Life away from work for this keen football supporter includes taking care of her young family; Sue is also heavily involved with her local community acting as a Church volunteer and Treasurer of her local Scout group.

Patrick Hope CTA Dip PFS

Patrick has been in the profession for over 30 years first training with HM Revenue & Customs, where he remained for over 5 years before decentralisation and relocation caused him to consider a new direction. Although HM Revenue & Customs was relatively inflexible and provided limited progression opportunities, he found the experience extremely valuable and never sees them as the enemy as he has considerable empathy with their work.

His next move was to a noble family where he acted as tax advisor. While there Patrick worked on and was able to help the family with a big tax case. He remained here for 3 years before moving on to BDO working there for almost 6 years before moving on to Deloittes for a period of 18 years.

With years of tax experience to back him up, Patrick then set up a successful sole practice. When the time came to expand, a mutual introduction brought him to Fuller Spurling and a successful tax department sprang up. The department advises upon planning to mitigate both income and capital taxes as well as handling compliance matters. It also handles the tax compliance obligations of individuals who have embarked upon tax saving schemes promoted by other institutions. As an expert in relation to tax aspects of legal claims, Patrick also provides consultancy services to other professional firms who do not have their own tax expertise. Whether dealing with companies and trusts or pensions schemes, the work centres around the individual and Patrick gains as much pleasure from advising and helping clients with modest requirements to save as he does from his wealthier clients who need more time and advice.

As a rule Patrick Hope sees his clients once or twice a year, which helps to cement the bonds. As he says, “The best results can only be gained when I have a full understanding of their needs and expectations, so it is important to build relationships with my clients.”

“Tax enquiries are more and more common. As processes have been streamlined, HM Revenue & Customs Inspectors have been released to make more enquiries into company and personal tax circumstances. We always handle such matters at partner level and I personally deal with any enquiries relating to my clients.”

“Tax planning is only part of the offer. Fuller Spurling is a well-rounded practice and having such an experienced and skilled team means all my clients’ needs can be fulfilled in either of our two offices.”

Despite the current economic gloom, Patrick is looking forward to a period of growth and expansion at Fuller Spurling. His own reputation is enhanced not only by his list of high net worth and celebrity clients, but also his involvement with the British Chambers of Commerce Tax Panel’s

When not at work, Patrick’s five children occupy his time, leaving him little to spare for his favourite hobby – golf.
